CERT

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

What is CERT?

CERT is a nationwide initiative which grew out of the Citizen Corps program formed by President George W. Bush following the catastrophe of September 11, 2001. In 2022, the CERT program moved under FEMA’s Preparedness Community Division.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates residents to be better prepared for an emergency by providing basic disaster response skills on what to do before, during, and after an emergency or disaster. When called upon, trained CERT members may also provide critical support to first responders through organized municipal or county-level emergency management.
